Habitat for HumanityWorking Together
Stanly County Habitat for Humanity is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway program. It is a nonprofit, non-denominational ministry that builds houses in partnership with churches, businesses, organizations, individuals, and potential homeowners. These houses are then sold to the approved homeowners at no profit with 20-25 year mortgages. The mortgage payments go into a revolving fund that helps to build more houses.
Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individuals, churches, and corporate donors provide most of the money and materials to build Habitat houses. New homeowners (partners) must invest 400 total hours– 300 hours in their home or HFH activity and 100 hours in another home. This investment is referred to as “sweat equity.” Thus, Habitat builds alongside those in need who are willing to give back to others.
Habitat For Humanity – The Benefits of Volunteering
The duty of a volunteer is to serve. We serve because we choose to and to make a positive difference in the world. It’s a wonderful thing. With volunteering comes great satisfaction in knowing your work will help others and bring them together. And though the joys are obvious to some, many people do not understand that the experience is an exchange of heart, and as a volunteer you are a recipient as well.
What’s incredible about volunteering is how much you’re able learn. With an organization like Habitat for Humanity, you can develop leadership skills, improve your communication, and network with licensed professionals. Volunteers can also expect to learn more about construction while working on exciting projects.
